My Interests of Leadership from My Experience

When I was high school student, I belonged to brass band club for six years and I experienced the captain in the 3rd grade. Since I already had been in this club for five years, I had seen many captains who have different characteristic each year. Therefore, when I became the captain, I had strong ideal vision that I really want to change better in this club. After my becoming the captain and changing many things such as rules, finally we achieved the goal at the summer competition.

However, it was not easy to change. For the first time, my vision was too much hard for the club because there are so different from the past. Therefore, my team members and teacher could not accept them first. I thought that I was sometimes competitive, but I did not give up to explain to them why I wanted to change and why it was needed. Also, I never have avoided to negotiate and I have kept to explain until they could understand. Then, my team mates' motivation gradually changed and my teacher gave me many opportunities what I expect to.

In L@E on Chapter1, it is said "a leader who failed to understand the distinction between individual actions and team motivation". In fact, it seemed that my vision was likely to fail for the first time because of my high expectation toward the club. However, there are a few members who tried to follow me and support me, so my vision became not only mine but also ours. I think it is very important that "leaders at The Eage need to maintain a balance between their own needs and the needs of the team, and they must concentrate on engaging the whole organization".

Through my experience of leader, I really sympathize with importance of 10 strategies in L@E. Especially, reinforcing the team message constantly is very important, because it is possible to approach and visualize the goal and it allows team members to keep memorizing it. I learned many things through the experience, but there are two main things that I want to challenge again about leadership.

First is how to enjoy myself during being a leader. Of course, I could enjoy to manage the club, but it was too hard to keep to being as model for team members. After finishing the role of captain, I thought that "I do not want to be a leader anymore!" Therefore, I really want to know how to enjoy the leadership and to try to be good leader.
Second is how to get along with sub leader. I think motivation of sub leader is more complicate than head of leader, because thier opportunity that they can pratically take a lead the team is less than head of leader. One thing that I regret is that I should anything to try communicating more with her, so I want to know this solution.

I hope to look for what good leadership is in this class with you!

Week Two-Thoughs on Chapter1

Vision and Quick Victories

First, In Preface, it starts from introduction of importance of 10 strategies that are key ideas about extraordinary leadership and teamwork. Then In this Chapter 1, it is written about first strategy:
"Never lose sight of the ultimate goal, and focus energy on short-term objectives".

It means that leader should be sure that having two equally important goal: the long- term and the critical short- term. Achieving each short -term goal is so important to making success an ultimate long-term goal. However, the author said that it is not necessary only achieving each  goal, but more importantly, it is essential to be willing to find a "New mark" without clinging to the past. Although, the more you desire to achieve the goal as leader the more difficult you give it up, it is necessary to think that there might be more important thing to do for all your team. As an example of Shackleton, he let go of his original plan, shifted his focus, and devoted himself completely to this new mission. He was able to shift quickly his long-term goal from the crossing of the continent to bringing every man back alive. This is exactly different from Stefansson.
